CAITHNESS will tomorrow continue their drive towards the top half of the RBS Caledonian 1 League.

They entertain Gordonians in the first of two successive home matches, victories in which would just about put to bed any lingering relegation fears.

The Aberdeen outfit will be desperate to make inroads on its nine-point deficit on the Greens as they battle to stave off demotion.

Greens coach Colin Sangster is surprised to see Gordonians in second-bottom spot.

He said: “I do not know too much about their squad but I thought they would be challenging towards the top of the league. We have home advantage tomorrow and we want to make that count so hopefully the crowd will really get behind us.”

Sangster came back for his third stint as coach just before Christmas when he laid down a tough challenge to his men.

“I said we should be looking to win all our remaining games. I didn’t see anybody who was scaring me. If we worked hard and everybody committed to the cause, I didn’t see any reason why we couldn’t achieve the target.

“We’ve got off to a good start in winning the first two games and we’ve built up a bit of momentum but it’s up to the players to keep their standards up.”

The past two blank Saturdays have not been helpful while members of the club were shocked to learn of last week’s car crash in which Grant Anderson was seriously injured.

It is hoped the popular young flanker will be able to return home this weekend after his spell in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Winger Gordy Macleod, who sustained whiplash and concussion in the accident, was kept in hospital overnight. He will not be considered for selection tomorrow.

Of the offshore contingent, scrum-half Graham Fryer, centre Norman Foubister and winger Neil Smith are available but Roddy Gray is not.

Prop Ranald Pottinger faces a late fitness test on the knee ligament damage he incurred in the last home match versus Orkney.

Michael Duffy has recovered from injury and could start at blindside flanker for the game that kicks off at 2pm.
