Though it was warmer than previous nights, grit and determination were still required to power the bike home into the teeth of a strong wind.

Grant was once again the fastest over the course but was pushed all the way by a resurgent Alun Arnold, competing in only his second time trial of the season, with just nine seconds separating them. Charlie Mackay took third with his fastest time of the season.

Two ladies started the time trial but only one finished, with Helen McCarthy suffering bike trouble on the outward journey. This left Joan Henry to bring it home unchallenged, recording a season’s best in the process.

The points league is still dominated by Grant who has won four of the five races. By collecting another maximum 30 points, Grant has forged an 18-point gap between himself and nearest competitor Ian Nicholson. Experienced heads will know that there is plenty of tough racing still ahead.
