GOLFING experiences don’t come a lot better than Durness on a fine day and that is what Caithness and Sutherland Seniors’ Golf Society got last Wednesday.

It was certainly a memorable day for Brora’s Alan Dixon as he made a winning debut in society outings, his 39-point effort leading the lower handicap category.

A steady front nine of 17 points, that included a blank at the eighth hole, was followed by a sparkling three-over-par back nine that yielded 22 points.

The winner had birdies at his fourth and 16th holes.

Walter Bremner (Golspie) missed some of the earlier fixtures through illness but put that behind him with a fine round.

After a 20-point first nine Bremner recovered from a couple of single-point holes to be standing on the 18th tee with a total of 38 points.

That was how it was to remain however as, in common with many, he failed to score on the final hole across the sea.

His 38 points earned second place ahead of Thurso’s Peter Knight who beat Vic Haden (Brora) on countback over the last six holes, after both scored 37 points.

Both players had 21 points for their first nine holes, including a birdie each.

Two points further back came Colin Robertson (Reay), George Johnston (Wick) and Don Bremner (Golspie).

Robertson did best over the water with a birdie first time round and a par the second time, beating Brora’s Ali MacLennan, with two pars, by a shot.

Geoff Robinson (Bonar/Ardgay), Drew Robertson (Wick) and Don Mackay (Royal Dornoch) were next best in the category with 34 points.

Thurso’s Paul Giggle, winner at Bonar/Ardgay, made it back-to-back victories with an excellent 42-point effort with 24 of those points coming on an outstanding first nine.

Giggle earned four points on the sixth hole where he got an extra shot and four more on the ninth with a birdie two.

Giggle was one of a few players to score at least one point on every hole. That was certainly not the case with Gordon Kilgour (Bonar/Ardgay) who had three successive blanks from the ninth hole yet still scored 39 points for second place in the higher handicap category.

Brora’s David Carter also had three blanks in his 37-point round as he claimed third place.

Wick’s Ricky Shearer and Royal Dornoch’s John Chambers were next best on 34 points, one better than the host club’s Gerald Klein.
