THURSO Bowling Club hosted the Highland Triples on Saturday with 15 teams entered. There were some close games in the early rounds which continued right to the final.

Mike Windsor’s hopes of a third Saturday success in a row were dashed as Colin Christie, Alan Morrison and Marina Bain cruised through to the final, winning their semi-final by 20 shots to seven against Liz Rhodes, Mike and John Harris.

Allan Swanson, John McGill and Stephen Rollinson had to battle hard to conquer Leah Taylor, Joan Bridge and Henny Henderson in their semi-final, winning the last five ends to eventually prevail 13-10.

The final was a game of two halves as Colin, Alan and Marina built up an 11-3 lead by the ninth end but again Allan, John and Stephen fought back to force an extra end with the game tied at 13 all.

Allan played two great bowls early on but Marina played into the head and sprung the jack to one of her bowls next to the ditch. Stephen responded with his last bowl and drew the shot which won the game as Marina’s last bowl narrowly missed the jack.

Thurso had mixed fortunes in the gents’ Scottish play-offs on Thursday. The solitary win came from Alec MacKay and Alan Morrison in the gents’ pairs.

Thurso’s other pair, Colin Christie and Brian Cormack, lost out on an extra end against their Orkney opponents.

There was no joy either for Thurso’s triples, Ali Gray, Colin Floydd and Jack Johnstone, and the first of the senior fours, Gary Henderson, Ali Gray, Colin Floydd and Jack Johnstone, both going down to strong teams. Thurso’s junior singles also went down when Danny Hitchin lost out to his Fortrose opponent.

The two mixed pairs, Lynne Swanson and Alan Morrison and Lorna and Brian Cormack, both won through to the quarter-finals which will be played on Sunday.

This Saturday will see the pairs league title played for and the draw will be posted on the notice board.
