There was an excellent field of 40 riders for the “10”, held in 25C and a very strong crosswind. Fort William’s Gavin Shirley stormed round to win in 21.42 mins, unexpectedly beating Peter Alexander – winner in Caithness the previous week – by 51 seconds, with Paul Rodden a second behind.

Washington took the veterans’ prize and retained the Chrissie Stuart Trophy while Mari Todd (Sandy Wallace Cycles) won the ladies’ title from Anne Murray (Square Wheels) with a fine 23.01. Iain Paton (Square Wheels) had a superb time of 25.11 to clinch the youth prize.

Morning rain cleared for the start of the Edinvale Hilly which was held in excellent conditions. Former Commonwealth Games rider James Millar set a new course record of 41.14 mins but 53-year-old Gregor Grant, a past winner of the Highland Cross and a leading mountain biker who is on superb form this year, took second place ahead of Shirley and Alexander.

Washington had a good ride for 14th place on this very hilly circuit while Todd and Charles Fletcher put in excellent times to lead the ladies and the juniors.
