FARR High’s shinty team was in action last Saturday in the second of their bi-annual matches versus Kinlochbervie. On each of their two previous meetings, the west coasters had trounced their north coast rivals 5-0.

The senior members of the Farr side approached this tie on their home pitch at Bettyhill determined to redress the balance before leaving school in the summer.

With a healthy crowd of pupils and villagers in attendance, referee Ewen Scott, from Wick, threw up the ball for the noon start.

After only three minutes into the game, the home side went ahead when James Macleod struck with a deflected free hit. Farr retained the lead until half-time.

An exciting second half was particularly memorable for four minutes of intense action. On the 48th minute, KLB looked certain to equalise only for Farr keeper Connor Cook to somehow manage to get his caman to a 20 yard

rocket-shot.

The visitors kept up the pressure and a minute later forward Mark Dorrian outdid keeper Cook with a similar shot to level.

A minute later, Scott Gray slotted it home from close range to put the home side back in the lead. It lasted until the 51st minute when danger man Dorrian was back in action to restore parity with another close-range effort. The floodgates seemed to have opened with the crowd expecting a goal-fest.

KLB looked the more likely to score with their superior firing power, but the Farr defence remained resolute and the game concluded at two goals apiece.

All credit must go to the young lion hearts from both sides for providing 80 minutes of absorbing action.

The next shinty competition in the far north will be the annual six-a-side junior and senior tournament in Scourie on Saturday, June 1.
