Five-goal George Ewing led the way as Wick Academy continued their title charge in SHFL Under 18 North with a dominant display at home to Buckie Thistle.

In a statement of intent by the young Scorries, they ran out 10-0 winners with Ewing taking his goal tally to 25 for the season.

With North West Skye pulling out of the league and having all their results scrapped, including a defeat to second-placed Balloan Thistle, the Caithness club found themselves with a more comfortable lead at the top of the table going into Sunday’s match at Naver.

Academy wasted no time in laying down a marker with talisman Ewing netting a hat-trick inside the opening half-hour before adding a fourth before the interval.

With the possibility that the title race could come down to goal difference, the young Scorries were eager for more and they came out of the blocks flying at the start of the second half.

Sam Shearer was on hand to tap home from a corner before Ewing added his fifth of the afternoon.

Jayden Bremner got in on the act with a 17th goal of the season before Robbie Boyd netted his first two goals of the campaign and Joshua Hughes rounded off the scoring at 10.

Coach Derek Shearer said: “We managed three games in as many weeks for the first time this season and it clearly showed as we got off to a flying start then never looked back.

“We played some lovely free-flowing football. Hopefully the weather doesn’t interfere too much in the coming weeks and we can get a run of games to help with consistency.”
