Elder sets blistering pace with fastest time on Bilbster track

Thirty-four autocross competitors turned out on Sunday for a day of fast and furious action on the hard and bumpy 600-yard track at Bilbster Mains.

This third meeting of the rejigged Caithness Autocross Club season saw Gary Elder in his powerful Mini Special again claim the fastest time of the day in a blistering 2.05.29 minutes, with Lenny Humphries' yellow buggy right on his shoulder in a time of 2.06.37.

Young Jack Ryan in a Toyota Yaris had another great afternoon in class one for cars up to 1000cc, coming home in 2.27.19, with Ryan Henderson – also driving a Toyota Yaris – finishing second in 2.30.03.

Class two, for 1001cc up to 1400cc, saw Angus Manson in his grey MG cross the finishing line in 2.22.44 as young Drew Mathieson came close in his Corsa on 2.27.03.

Craig Manson took the honours in the 1401cc up to 1700cc class, driving home his Peugeot 106 in a time of 2.21.19 .The Corsa Sport driven by John Taylor took second place in 2.38.23.

Class four, for cars 1701cc unlimited, again had the biggest entry. It saw Gordie Donn driving a Honda Civic blast his way to the chequered flag in a time of 2.15.90. Ryan Sinclair came close, driving his Clio, in a time of 2.16.35.

In the rear-wheel unrestricted class Ronald Gunn in his MR2 was in brilliant form, checking in on 2.28.97.

Gavin Sutherland, driving his road-legal Rover City, clocked in at 2.41.25.

Autocross commentator Willie Mackay said: "It was another well-organised, socially distanced autocross meeting with some very fast times on the high-speed grass track. There was clever manoeuvring and great gear changes in a sport where every split second counts."
