Wick Academy manager Davie Kirkwood: 'We’ll aim to take the opportunity to show the rest of the league we’ll be a force next year.'

That’s according to manager Davie Kirkwood who highlighted games away to Lossiemouth and Rothes when, despite dominating, the Scorries came home without a point.

Tomorrow Wick will be making their final away trip this season when they visit Harlaw Park to take on Inverurie Locos, before welcoming them at Harmsworth Park a week later.

Kirkwood is aware of the danger Inverurie present, but said he is looking for the Scorries to finish their fine away form with another win.

“The Locos have been in good form this season but I am only concerned about how our players perform,” he said.

“They had a great result at the weekend against Nairn County so their confidence will be high. They are the only team left that we haven’t played against this season so I don’t know too much about them.

“They have been one of the strongest sides in the league so it will be a tough challenge.”

Academy will be without Alan Farquhar, but welcome back Sam Mackay and Ross Allan from suspension.

After tomorrow, Wick play seven matches at home which could help them climb the table.

“It might be unrealistic to say, but we are going to go into every match thinking that we can win it,” said Kirkwood.

“The double-header against Inverurie won’t be easy, but the result at Harlaw Park will have a big effect on the team that Locos bring up to the Far North the following week.

“The majority of games we have to play are against sides that are below us in the table, so we’ll aim to take the opportunity to show the rest of the league we’ll be a force next year.”

Locos still have a shout of ending the season as champions – but it would require dramatic slip-ups from both Forres Mechanics and Cove Rangers.

Co-manager Kenny Coull said it would be unrealistic to think the side still has a chance of success but added it will continue to fight for every point.

“There is too much ground to make up on the top two, but if we were to beat Buckie Thistle to third we would see it as a successful season.

“Our recent form has been excellent and we are confident about taking that into the match on Saturday. Wick Academy are a fantastic footballing side and we are aware of what they are capable of if they are allowed to have the ball. But we are also playing some great football and picking up a lot of points so we have nothing to fear.”

Inverurie moved to third when they earned a 3-3 draw at Fraserburgh on Wednesday.
