HALKIRK athlete Andrew Douglas claimed silver in the World Mountain Running Series after claiming a podium place in the final race of the season.

The 2015 world series champion missed out on retaining his title to Petro Mamu of Eritrea who claimed the series championship after a dominant display during all six races during the 2016 season.

But Douglas did enough to claim second overall after finishing third during the final race in Slovenia.

Content with silver, Douglas said he was already looking forward to the 2017 series and will be looking to reclaim his series title

“I’m really happy with how the world cup series went.

"It’s difficult to keep performances at a high level across the summer because it’s a long period to compete over with the first race in June and the last one in October.

“The series rewards consistency and that’s what I’ve managed to achieve this season. I’ve been able to maintain top-five finishes across the races I’ve competed in.

“Whilst I was slightly disappointed with finishing 11th at the world championships in Bulgaria, the other races went well enough that I was comfortable in second place overall. The difference from last year was really down to the dominance of Petro Mamu.

“So the challenge for next year is to work out how to close the gap and it’s one that I’m already looking forward to.”
