Wick karting competitor Darren Bain raced in the second round of the Northern Challenge at Grampian Kart Club's track at Boyndie, near Banff, looking to build on his first-round victory at Golspie in the Honda Cadets class.

The Saturday practice was in very wet conditions but 12-year-old Darren took to it well. Happy with the kart set-up, he decided to finish up early and get out of the rain.

Sunday, race day, brought the same conditions but not the same luck. Heat one saw Darren retire early with a puncture and a spinner in front of him cost Darren a dropped bumper in heat two.

He found his pace again in heat three, finishing in second position with the fastest lap of the heat.

This qualified Darren ninth for the final in which he drove to the limit, pushing for a podium place, but it wasn’t to be and finished the race in fourth position. Ian Campbell (10) from Watten secured sixth position.

Over the two rounds Darren finished in third place in the Northern Challenge, with Vinnie Lewis (10) from Aberdeen taking the top spot and Lewis Stewart (also 10) from Dingwall in second place.
