Six teams from Wick’s Rosebank and St Fergus club took part, with the duo of Eddie Ashton and Alex Thompson the pick of the bunch as they progressed to the semi-final where they went down by six shots to John Harris and Janet Sinclair.

The second semi saw Danny Hitchin and Marina Bain score a six-shot triumph over Betty MacDonald and Marjorie McDermid.

The final was a close encounter early on with Danny and Marina holding a two-shot lead after 11 ends but the 12th end proved to be crucial as Marina played a superb shot against the odds to pick up a seven and open up a nine-shot lead. Danny and Marina pushed on from there to claim the title.

The Thurso green later hosted the Caithness junior championships, sponsored by Top Joe’s and the Thurso Comm, with two round-robin competitions played at under-16 and under-18 level.

Six players took part in the under-16 competition and last year’s winner Ryan Watt wasted no time in reaching the final after winning all his group games. He was joined in the final by Ryan Campbell from Wick’s St Fergus Club who just pipped Chelsea Bain on shot difference. Watt kept up his good form in the final and raced away to a commanding lead to retain his title.

Four players competed in the under-18 section and it was shot difference that decided the group with Danny Hitchin on top and Bonnie Dymond just ousting Luke Manson to second place. In the final, Danny – who had lost to Bonnie in the group stages – started better, but she fought back to close the game to 17-14. Danny found his form again to claim the four shots he required over the next two ends to lift the trophy.
