Local rider Danielle Sinclair, of Wick, is now the Pony Club northern regional eventing champion after winning her section in the finals held at Auchlishie, Kirriemuir.

She was one of the members of the Caithness Pony Club's blue team who qualified for the grassroots championships after coming third in the 80cm section at the area qualifier held at Burgie Eventing Centre last month.

Delighted with her win 13-year-old Danielle, a Wick High School pupil, was said to be "absolutely over the moon" with her talented seven-year-old pony Leahs Cruz – it was the first time they had taken part in an eventing competition. "To win was amazing, especially against teams from all over the UK," said proud mum Hilda Hood.

Danielle got the 14hh Irish Sports Horse gelding, as a five-year-old just backed and has put in all the work in herself so that has made her achievement extra special. They finished on their dressage score of 28.3, going double clear in the showjumping and cross-country.

The other team members on the day were Alysha Holmes, riding Drumroe Rory, Lauren Oag on Candy Reign, and Erin Hewitson on Cloontuskert Orga Mist. They all put in a great performance coming sixth overall.

Everyone did well to tackle the dressage phase in the pouring rain and then all went on to go clear in the showjumping phase. Alysha finished on a dressage score of 36.7 and was sixth in her section after a faultless cross-country round which she completed in style.

Sophia Ramsøy is representing the club down at the JCB Pony Club Championships at Offchurch Bury in Warwickshire this week. The event started on Friday and runs until this Sunday (August 13-22), and it is the first time the championships have been held at this venue.

She qualified in the showjumping at Burgie with both her horses Lamabada and Hinkelein – one in the open 90cm and one in the 110cm. Sophia also qualified to take part in the eventing 90cm open class and the 100+ section.

Full information about the JCB Pony Club Championships and results can be found on the Pony Club website.
