Riders in Caithness Cycling Club’s final 10-mile time trial of the year had to contend with heavy rain, a 17mph north wind and a temperature of only 11 degrees Celsius.

As a result only four stalwarts faced timekeeper John Falconer. This was to be the decider for the gold medal in the Handicap League, between long-time leader Iain Miller and early-season leader Gary Angus, who were separated by just half a point.

Not surprisingly, all the riders were well behind their best times but Gary – at 71 seconds behind his season’s best – took the maximum of six points, just pipping Roger Broughton who was 72 seconds off his best.

Fastest on the night was Iain Miller, but while his 26min 22sec was good for the conditions, it was 88 seconds slower than his best. As a result Gary took the gold medal, Iain the silver and Angus MacKay the bronze.

Times: 1 Iain Miller, 26min 22sec; 2 Gary Angus, 28.01; 3 Roger Broughton, 28.21; 4 Martine Hughes, 37.01.

Handicap League Final Positions: 1 Gary Angus (56 points); 2 Iain Miller (54.5); 3 Angus MacKay (46.5); 4 Alistair Miller (42); 5 Martine Hughes (41); 6 Alasdair Washington (35).

Veteran Alasdair Washington travelled to Invergordon for the Ronnie MacDonald 10-mile time trial, held in pleasantly mild conditions, but with a strong south-westerly wind that made for a tough return leg.

However, his time of 27min 56sec was enough to win the veterans prize and set a new Scottish record for an 86 year old.

Race winner was Chris Petrie (Aberdeen Wheelers) in 20min 15sec, from Elgin’s Sam Glover (21.01) and Ross-shire’s Mark Dryburgh (21.10). First lady was Lorna Breetzke (Vanelli Project) in 23min 42sec, from Moray Firth team-mates Martha Gates (25.37) and Roma Shepherd (26.46).

First junior, Tyler Clare (Inverness CC) posted a very impressive 22min 8sec, boding well for the future.
