Coach proud of Wick swimmers’ efforts in Orkney Open Meet

Swimmers from Wick were praised as a credit to their club after crossing the Pentland Firth to take part in the third annual Orkney Open Meet.

The two-day meet in Kirkwall’s Pickaquoy Centre, hosted by Orkney Amateur Swimming Club, was open to all ages from eight upwards.

Wick Amateur Swimming Club was represented by 10 swimmers: Leighton and Jackson Lunn, Davie and Bella Swanson, Jack Angus, Eva Forbes, Morven Begg, Tyler Ronai, Amy Swanson and Paige Ronaldson.

Every swimmer was successful in securing personal bests, and this meet marked Bella’s first time competing in a year due to injury. Wick swimmers also came home with several medals.

Results: Jack Angus (boys 10/11) – Gold for 100 and 200m breaststroke, silver for 50m breaststroke, 200m free, 200m IM and 800m free, and bronze in 100m and 200m back and 100m free.

Morven Begg (girls 12/13) – Bronze for 200m back and 200m free.

Eva Forbes (girls 12/13) – Bronze for 200m breast and bronze in freestyle relay.

Jackson Lunn (boys 12/13) – Gold for 200m free and breaststroke, silver for 50m butterfly, 50m and 100m breaststroke and 50m and 100m freestyle, and bronze in freestyle relay.

Leighton Lunn (boys 8/9) – Silver in 50m and 100m back and 50m breaststroke, bronze in 50m fly and free, and bronze in 100m free.

Tyler Ronai (boys 12/13) – Silver for 100m fly.

Paige Ronaldson (girls 10/11) – Gold for 50m and 200m free and 200m IM, silver for 50m fly and 200m breaststroke, and bronze for 50m breaststroke, 100m free and freestyle relay.

Davie Swanson (boys 14/15) –Silver for 200m back, 200m free and 800m free, and bronze in freestyle relay.

Coach Russell Angus said: “Well done to all the swimmers for swimming their hearts out. I was so proud of them all.

“Their behaviour was amazing all weekend and they were a credit to the club.

“The trip would not have been possible without very generous sponsorship and funding towards transport. A huge thanks to NorthLink Ferries for making the trip accessible in terms of cost.

“Thanks also to the hosts, Orkney Amateur Swimming Club, for a fabulous, if incredibly hot, weekend of swimming.”
