Close encounters in county under-15 badminton championships

IT has been a busy spell of junior badminton action in the county. The under-11 and under-13 championships took place over successive weekends and last Friday it was the turn of the under-15s for their competition at the Wick community campus.

Play began at 2pm and continued into the evening with some gruelling matches and very close games.

The girls’ singles was won by Lauren Mackenzie (Wick) who beat Kirsty Henderson (Bower) 21-14 in the final. Keira Gunn (Wick) took bronze position.

Allan Robertshaw (Thurso) defeated Will Oag (Thurso) 21-10 in the final of the boys' singles. Liam Flavell (Reay) took the bronze.

The doubles were very close, particularly the final of the boys' event with only one point between the gold and silver positions. Allan Robertshaw and Will Oag beat Finlay Swanson (Bower) and Liam Flavell 20-21 in an excellent final.

Connor Wares and Taylor Swan (Thurso) took bronze position.

The girls' doubles also saw a close encounter with Keira Gunn and Lauren Mackenzie winning 21-18 against Grace Macintosh (Halkirk) and Kirsty Henderson. The bronze position went to Sarah Henstridge and Emma Macdonald (Wick).

More close games were played in the mixed doubles competition. An exciting final was won by Finlay Swanson and Kirsty Henderson, 21-19 against Lauren Mackenzie and Allan Robertshaw. Keira Gunn and Will Oag took bronze.

The under-17 championships will follow on this Friday at the Wick community campus, starting at 2pm.
