Caithness United under-16s produced a clinical performance with a 12-1 demolition of their Nairn County counterparts at the Naver all-weather pitch in Thurso.

Sunday's encounter was the latest match in their Highland Youth League season and it saw them extend their unbeaten run in emphatic fashion.

United hit five goals in the opening 20 minutes, although to Nairn’s credit they stuck to their game plan of trying to play passing football and remaining as competitive as possible.

However, it was evident that they were up against an on-form Caithness side who showed spells of scintillating football in front of a good crowd.

United’s fifth goal was one for the purists, as the team retained possession through a series of 20-plus passes before Morgan Kennedy swept the ball into the net.

Although more direct, their ninth goal was both instinctive and spectacular. From a corner, the ball was fed into space at the edge of the box to the onrushing Jed Armitage who met it in his stride and struck an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Caithness coach Ross Sutherland said: “After a break from competitive games for almost a month, including a two-week break from training, it was pleasing to see that the boys were eager to get back to football.

"The instant hunger that they showed from the first whistle was exactly what we asked of them. That, combined with some good patterns of play and clinical finishing, saw us effectively kill off the game in the first third.

"Overall this was a good game for the team to get back into the groove, and with a number of tough matches coming up I’m sure this will stand us in good stead as we look to continue to build on our performances game on game.”

Caithness scorers were Morgan Kennedy (4), Josh Hughes (2), Owen Bain (2), Jed Armitage (2), Lewis Swan and Matthew Mackay.
