Clear win for Arnold in Caithness Cycling Club time trial

Caithness Cycling Club’s latest weekly 10-mile time trial saw a clear win for Wick visitor Alun Arnold, who clocked 24 min 10 sec on a night when conditions did not favour fast times.

The temperature was unusually high at 22C and the strong headwind to the turn resulted in outward times that were five or even six minutes slower than for the return, when most riders scorched home at close to 30 mph. The fastest conditions are generally when times for both legs are comparable.

Second-fastest Iain Miller continues to improve and, despite the wind, took 14 seconds from his season’s best, as did Angus MacKay, while Gary Angus and Alistair Miller were very close behind, with improvements of 13 and 12 seconds respectively.

There was an outstanding first-ever time trial from Wick visitor Stuart Swanson, who clearly showed his strength in adverse conditions with a fine time of 26 min 3 sec for third place, on a “road bike”, i.e. without tri-bars or a disc wheel. This is a new category to encourage riders into the sport.
