There was a double triumph for the Castletown Primary School teams who competed at the Thurso Associated Schools Group netball tournament at Mount Pleasant.

Castletown “A” won all their games to lift the “A” team league, while Castletown “B” won four of their games and drew one which gave them overall victory among the “B” teams.

The “A” team also won the Rural Cup for Netball which is determined by the result of the Halkirk/Castletown match.

The event was organised by Active Schools coordinator Alyn Gunn, with support from the primary school head teachers, and was umpired by volunteer pupils from Thurso High School.

Castletown P6/7 teacher Lindsay Coghill said: “I was absolutely delighted with our two netball teams – they did Castletown proud!”

She went on: “It was great to see this event back on the calendar for the pupils as due to Covid it had not been played since 2019.

“There was some super netball and very good sportsmanship across all the teams.

“We even noticed a player high-fiving an opposition player after a particularly good goal was scored!

“It was also really nice to see the children taking the opportunity to further develop friendships that they had made at the recent transition days to Thurso High School. It was a very good day all round.”

Alyn Gunn said: “Active Schools were delighted to put this event on and I am extremely thankful to my old primary six teacher Christine Firth of Mount Pleasant for the help with setting it up. Thanks also to the umpires from Thurso High School – they were fantastic throughout the day and ensured the event ran smoothly.

“A big well done to all the teams who participated and congratulations to Castletown who were excellent on the day.”
