WICK’s Francis Street Club hosted the third annual Bfest pairs championships at the weekend, with players from both divisions battling it out for the final title of the Wick & District Pool League season.

The Seaforth Club pairing of George Smith and Nathan Lightly won all of their group games on Saturday, playing some great pool to book their place in Sunday’s semi final.

Greg Thompson and Gavin Simpson were also in form as they too qualified from group A. The big surprise of the group stages was the elimination of last year’s finalists Greg Simpson and Jordan Tait.

There were no real shocks in group B as Alan Forbes and James Riach, of Blackstairs "2", and Bruce Honeyman and Ryan Carter, of Camps "2", were all impressive as they too secured their places in the last four.

Forbes and Riach got off to a great start in their semi match, taking a 3-1 lead over Sinclair Bay’s Thompson and Simpson. The Keiss lads did well to level it at 3-3, but the Blackstairs duo took control of the match to run out 6-4 winners.

The other semi final saw the experienced pairing of Honeyman and Carter race into a 3-0 lead over Smith and Lightly.

Some fine potting from the Seaforth Club players helped get themselves back into the match as they levelled it at 3-3. The next three frames went the way of the Camps Bar players to clinch their place in the final.

Honeyman and Carter met Forbes and Riach in a race to seven frames for the title. After eight tactical frames of a very high standard, they could not be separated as Honeyman and Carter came from 4-2 down to draw level at 4-4. Forbes and Riach produced some excellent potting as they went to within one frame of victory to lead 6-4. Honeyman and Carter showed great character to win the next two frames to make it 6-6, meaning the match went a thirteenth frame decider.

The Camps players controlled the final frame until it came down to the match-winning ball. Carter, though forced to play left handed, executed the shot to win the match.
