Caithness United under-16s began their Highland Youth Football League season with an emphatic 7-0 win over Nairn County in Wick on Sunday in front of a large support.

United dominated possession over the course of the game and in doing so produced some excellent spells of play.

The young Caithness team seemed to take their time to get into their stride, particularly in the final third, but were resolute in defence – meaning their goal was never seriously under threat over the 90 minutes.

Once Caithness settled into the game, they produced some free-flowing football, scoring some impressive goals by stringing passes together around their opponents before executing some clinical finishes.

Caithness coach Alan Kennedy said: “I thought the boys did well, particularly when you consider a few have never played together in a competitive match before. For some, this match was the first time they’ve pulled on a Caithness shirt.

"We were perhaps guilty of overplaying it at times, where we could have been a little more direct, but we can’t be too critical given the scoreline. To be fair, no team will be clicking at this time of the season, so to see an eagerness and confidence in our players to get on the ball and watch some of the interchanges they produced from back to front was very encouraging.

"What’s also promising is the fact that we have others within our squad who can come in and offer us something a little different in certain areas of the park too. Between Steve Bain, Kevin Miller and myself [Caithness United under-16 coaches] we have identified a few aspects from the game that we will look to work on over the next few training sessions in preparation for our next league match.

"But, given what we have seen from all the players over the last month, and the potential we see within the group, we are really looking forward to working with the lads and watching them develop as a squad over the season ahead.”

Goalscorers were Alfie Miller (2), Kian Helliwell, John Hooker, Scott Macdonald, Connor Davidson and Jayden Bremner.
