Caithness United under-13s overcame their Do Soccer opponents from Tain on Saturday to rubber-stamp their “invincibles’’ status for 2019, as they finished off their astonishing year in the Moray Firth Youth Development League with a 4-0 victory.

Caithness found themselves in control from the outset in the match played at Dingwall Academy. Their quick passing style was put to good use as they retained the ball for long periods.

This allowed them pick holes in the Do Soccer defence and create several opportunities in front of goal.

In the 15th minute an accurately delivered corner from Sam Reid was met by Euan Kennedy, who powerfully headed the ball into the Do Soccer goal to open the scoring.

United extended their lead just before the end of the second period when another corner caused chaos in the Do Soccer goalmouth. This time a whipped ball from Matthew Robertson was not dealt with by the Tain defence and it broke to Scott McDonald.

McDonald pounced onto it in a flash and fired a low shot into the net past some last-ditch attempted blocks.

Two goals in four minutes in the final period dealt a crushing blow to the Tain team.

The third Caithness goal again came from a corner kick.

On this occasion Jed Armitage leapt high to connect with an expertly delivered ball from the trusty right foot of Sam Reid. Armitage managed to get enough contact on the ball to steer it into the far corner of the goal.

Reid completed the scoring. He showed quick feet at the edge of the box to elude two defenders before letting fly with an unstoppable low drive that went just inside the post.

After the game, coach Steve Bain said: “The result doesn’t tell the full story of the dominance we exerted against our opponents, who have definitely improved since we last played them in October.

"Our boys kept possession of the ball really well and were excellent at working the ball from one side of the pitch to the other while going forward. There is a maturity in the team's play that progresses with every game, no matter who is in the squad, which highlights the depth of quality we have at our disposal.

"Ironically, it was our two goalkeepers, Tom Armitage and Joshua Hughes, who were excellent in keeping us at bay, as they helped out the opposition by taking it in turns to play for Do Soccer."

Sam Shearer was named as man of the match for his hard work in the middle of the park. Bain added: "He’s the guy who wins the ball for us and then shifts it on with minimum fuss. I struggle to think of a misplaced pass from him.”
