A second half goal-route by Caithness United’s Jayden Bremner helped the under 16s side win their latest league match in emphatic style over Alness United.

The under 14s team won 9-0 over Muir of Ord.

The game took place on an excellent playing surface at Back Park, Castletown, on Sunday where the local lads’ dominance paid off as they ran out 10-0 winners.

The young Caithness team went in at half time leading by two goals after a good first-half performance, but lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. Whatever was said in the dressing room at the break seemed to work, as they looked a rejuvenated side in the second half, creating lots of opportunities, and crucially were far more clinical.

Bremner caught the eye, scoring five goals from a more advanced role than he played in the first 45 minutes. Pulling the strings in the middle of the park for the home team was Steven Esson, who seemed to always be available to link play up from defence to attack.

To complete an impressive spine of the Caithness team was their centre back captain Arran Bain, who marshalled the defence very effectively in a classy performance, which also involved a neatly placed headed goal, aptly assisted by Esson.

Caithness coach Kevin Miller said: “The boys were in control of the game from the kick-off. We kept possession well and played some really nice football at times. There was a good mix of individual and team goals, which was very pleasing considering it's only the second game they've played together.

"We are not getting carried away as we have some very tough games in the coming weeks, but we now have something good to build on.”

On top of Jayden Bremner's five goals, Cory Miller got two and Arran Bain, Scott Macdonald and Kian Helliwwell completed the scorers.

Meanwhile, Caithness United's under 14s side also won in style, with a 9-0 victory over Muir of Ord Rovers at Upper Bignold, Wick, on Sunday.

The goals involved hat-tricks for both Max Ross and Matthew Cook, as well as goals from Rhuaridh Kean, Kody Munro and an own goal.

Coach Stewart Ross said: “I am delighted with the comprehensive win and clean sheet. There were some cracking individual goals, and we controlled the game from the start. There will be tougher tests ahead, but it’s really good to see the boys beginning to gel.”
