Caithness United under-14s produced an excellent team display to round off their league campaign with a 3-3 draw against an unbeaten Clachnacuddin side.

United were looking to avenge the 2-0 defeat they suffered last month at the Wick campus.

Caithness were unfortunate to fall behind in Sunday’s encounter on the Charleston Academy 3G when a headed clearance from Dhaill Mackay ricocheted against the back of one of the Clach forwards straight into the path of his strike partner, who was able to squeeze the ball past United keeper Liam Bruce.

The visitors slipped further behind when a Clach defender rose unchallenged to knock the ball into the net from a corner.

Caithness then had keeper Bruce to thank when he made a fantastic double save from another set-piece.

Going two goals behind did not deter Caithness and they deservedly got a goal back late in the first half. A well-taken set-piece by Rory Anderson was finished at the back post by Olly Forbes from a tight angle for his first goal of the season.

That helped galvanise the away side and they came out of the blocks strongly at the start of the second period.

United were rewarded for their efforts through a direct free kick from the right-hand side of the box that was powerfully dispatched into the net by Ross Moodie after a foul on Jackson Lunn.

The equaliser rattled the home team and Caithness continued to create chances.

They deservedly took the lead after Ruaridh Kean drove from deep before being upended in the box. Kean fired the resultant penalty into the roof of the net.

Caithness continued to create chances but couldn’t add to their lead.

United looked to have weathered the storm and to have inflicted a first defeat of the season on the Inverness side, but they were undone through the award of a soft-looking penalty for handball.

Bruce saved the initial effort but the Clach striker was first to the follow-up and slid it home.
