A YOUNG Caithness squash player will be playing for the under-20 Scotland team for the first time in a major tournament in Edinburgh this weekend.

Jamie Henderson, who is 19 and from Thurso, will be one of five players competing against opponents from England, Wales and the Czech Republic in the event which is being held at Heriot Watt University on Saturday and Sunday. Jamie, who is currently training as a full-time squash player in Edinburgh and under the wing of Scottish National coach Roger Flynn, is "really looking forward" to the tournament.

It will be the first time he has represented the under-20 team although he has played previously for the under-17s and under-19s Scotland teams.

He was a member of the under-19 side which reached the semi-finals of the European Team Championships in Porto in Portugal in May. That was the best finish of a under-19 Scottish team for 25 years. Jamie has also been selected for Senior Scotland B team which will compete in an international tournament against England and Wales in Cardiff next month.

He started playing squash in Thurso when he was 13 and helps coach the club’s juniors when back home. His parents, James and Alison Henderson, live in Harald Drive. "We are really delighted he is doing so well and has been selected to play in the under-20 national team for the first time and the senior Scotland B team," said his mother Alison this week. James Henderson, an all-round sportsman, introduced his son to squash when he was just a teenager.
