Caithness Ladies remain at the top of the SWF Highlands and Islands League after an impressive 4-1 victory over Clachnacuddin in Inverness.

The visitors proved too good for their hosts at Grant Street Park on Sunday as they established a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes.

Donna Majilton opened the scoring after nine minutes when she fired a powerful low drive from the edge of the box into the bottom right corner of the net.

She doubled the advantage nine minutes later when she connected with a cross from the right wing from Sophie Kinghorn to tap home from close range.

Kinghorn made it 3-0 six minutes into the second half she latched on to Kara Sutherland's free kick into the box and fired home from 12 yards.

The fourth came in the 65th minute when Carly Erridge charged into the box after latching on to a through ball by Majilton. Her powerful drive was too hot for the goalkeeper to handle as she couldn't parry it away from the net.

Clachnacuddin pulled one back with seven minutes remaining. Mhairi Stewart took a pass from Shannon Fulton and fired a low drive past Geena Hossack.

The win means Caithness maintain their 100 per cent record with two wins out of two. They are ahead of Sutherland on goal difference.

Assistant coach Alan Murray said it was a confident display.

"It was a very good performance from the team, especially in the first half," he said.

"I thought that we dominated in the first half and created some good chances.

"Hannah Hutson especially was really good today with her performance in the middle of the park. Donna was also really good for us."

Caithness have scored 11 goals in their first two league matches, starting with a 7-2 victory over Ross and Cromarty in Thurso on the opening day.

Murray is pleased with how ruthless the players have been in front of goal so far.

He believes Caithness have a chance of being title contenders this season.

However, he says it is still early days with a lot of games to be played.

"It is very pleasing that we have scored 11 goals in our first two matches," he said. "I think that we have a chance, but it is still too early to say.

"However, you can't say any better than two wins in the first two games with 11 goals."

The Highlands and Islands League Cup draw has been made, with a change to the format this season.

The tournament will start with two group stages, with the top two teams in each progressing to the semi-finals.

Caithness have been drawn in Group A with Clachnacuddin and Orkney.

Group B will have Buckie, Nairn St Ninian, Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland.

Ross County have decided not to take part in the cup.

Each team will play each other once in the group stage.

Caithness reached the final of the Highlands and Islands Cup last season, losing 3-1 to Buckie.

Murray said: "I think we should have a good chance of getting through the group.

"It will be tough as the teams are very even in the league."

SWF Highlands and Islands League results from Sunday: Clachnacuddin 1, Caithness 4; Nairn 3, Ross County Development 3; Ross and Cromarty 1, Sutherland 6.
