Two junior badminton players from Caithness competed in the Scottish Schools Badminton Union (SSBU) 2013 Age Group Tournament at Wishaw Sports Centre.

Sophie Mackay, of Dunnet, was the girls' singles runner-up, while Liam Sinclair, from Wick, was the boys' single consolation (B Plate) and boys' doubles winner.

Saturday's tournament in North Lanarkshire was open to players born in 2013 or later.

In the girls’ singles, Sophie topped her group after winning all her games. She progressed to the semi-finals, winning 21-16, 21-13, before being beaten 21-10, 21-13 in the final.

In the girls' doubles, played in a round-robin format, Sophie teamed up with Lucie Sneddon. They won one of their games and lost one, picking up the runners-up trophy.

Liam lost two of his three games in the group stage so went into the B Plate consolation play-off. He won his semi-final comfortably and came out on top 21-11, 21-10 in the final.

The boys' doubles event was played as a round-robin. Liam joined forces with Aarav Sinha and they won all their games, making them the boys' doubles winners.

Sophie and Liam made it back to Caithness in time for Sunday's junior inter-county challenge against Orkney.
