Caithness duo hailed as role models after 300 appearances
Hamish Coghill and Gordie Macleod were given a guard of honour at the end of the Greens’ National Shield win against Panmure at Millbank to mark their 300th appearances.
The pair have played together during nearly all their careers, travelling the length and breadth of Scotland.
Both played in the Caley 1 title-winning season in 2017/18 which saw Caithness promoted to National League Division 3. They were also in the squad that finished as shield runners-up in 2014.
Coghill won his first cap as a 17-year-old in 2007 and has gone on to play in just about every position. Captain last season, he has played on despite having developed arthritis in his hips several years ago.
Macleod, who has had spells at half-back, centre, the back three and flanker, won his first cap in 2006 as a 16-year-old. He has been battling a recurrent knee injury, having made a remarkable return to action after being crocked again in the opening game of the season.
Head coach Cameron Boyd described the pair as role models for their peers and the club’s juniors.
He said: “You can imagine the sacrifices they have made to play for the club – the miles they have clocked up, the nights they have spent away from their families, the work shifts they have turned down.
“They have been great servants to the club on the field and, at training, both of them take the time to help the younger players. I couldn’t ask anything more from them.”
Boyd was delighted their respective milestones were marked with a stylish victory against Panmure.
