Caithness cyclists ride their way to success in competitions across Scotland

Caithness Cycling Club riders competed in the weekly 10 mile time trial, followed by the inter-county competition in Orkney and British 25 mile championships in Forfar.

Andrew MacLeod was on good form to win the local 10-mile trial to clock 21 minutes 39 seconds to take two seconds off his season’s best.

Six riders posted their fastest times this year, led by Colin Gregory (72 seconds), Gary Angus (64 seconds) and Martine Hughes (41 seconds.)

Iain Miller leads the Handicap League, but by the narrowest of margins from Gary Angus, with just one event to go.

In the 25-mile time trial in Orkney, Shetlander Andrew Grant won in 55 minutes and 34 seconds, followed by teammate Robin Atkinson (57.05) and Andrew Macleod from Caithness in 57.54.) Wick’s Hamish McAllan was fourth in 65:25.

Fastest woman was Thurso’s Debbie Larnach in 69:36.

In the 10-mile time, Andrew Grant claimed victory in a time od 21.24 with Robin Atkinson second in 21.46 and Andrew MacLeod third in 22.25. Debbie Larnach was first woman in 26.48.

Andrew MacLeod won the hill climb up Mount Widdiford, was a fine win for Andrew MacLeod with Alison Leitch of Orkney fastest woman.

The overall weekend was based on points for the first five in each event. Shetland scored 26 points, Caithness 21 and Orkney 15.

Meanwhile Thurso veteran Alasdair Washington competed in Forfar for the British 25-mile championships.

Washington found the drags hard going but was delighted to post a time of 69.31 to take the age 85 to 89 award and medal.
