In an extremely close finish to Caithness Cycling Club’s annual hill climb championship on Scrabster Hill, Scott Phares took the gold medal by a single second from Alistair Miller, who was a single second ahead of Chris Gregory.

On a fine evening with a light tailwind, Roger Broughton was a mere three seconds off the winning time but had to settle for fourth place. Martine Hughes rode strongly and clocked an excellent time to take the ladies' gold medal.

Results: 1 Scott Phares, 6 min 44 sec; 2 Alistair Miller, 6.45; 3 Chris Gregory, 6.46; 4 Roger Broughton, 6.47; 5 Gary Angus, 7.42; 6 Martine Hughes, 8.38.

Eighty-six-year-old Alasdair Washington travelled to Kildary for the Iain Longbotham Memorial 25-mile time trial which was the north of Scotland championship. He was on good form to win both the veteran (age standard) prize in the open event and the north veteran title with a time of 1hr 10 min 35 sec.

Race winner was Kyle Gordon (RT23) from Dingwall, Commonwealth Games rider and full-time cyclist, who scorched round in 49 min 24 sec, while second place went to 18-year-old Lewis Dey (RT23) from Forres with an amazing time of 52 min 15 sec, breaking the 23-year-old Scottish junior record by 65 seconds.
