Caithness Ladies will be missing a few key players when they take on Buckie this weekend – but head coach Tom McKenna sees it as an opportunity for others in the squad to show what they can do.

Buckie overcame Caithness in the final of the SWF Highlands and Islands League Cup last season on their way to achieving a second league and cup double.

“They’re the reigning league and cup champions and they’ve done it two years on the trot now,” McKenna said. “It’s going to be a big, big ask for us.

“Buckie are strong, they’re physical, and they seem to have players with a good understanding of the game.

“Carly Erridge is not available and she will be a big miss. We’ve got a few strong girls missing, but it’s an opportunity for other people to come in.”

Caithness are fourth in the SWF Highlands and Islands League table with nine points from their opening five fixtures, a point behind second-placed Buckie.

McKenna said: “It’s finding the balance to keep the players developing and nurturing the young players and trying to gain results and keep winning games.

“They’ve been putting a lot of pressure on themselves and you can see that in their body language.

“I want them to enjoy themselves. That’s why we give up our time – to go out and enjoy the game of football.”

Sunday’s match at Back Park, Castletown, kicks off at 2pm.

SWF Highlands and Islands League fixtures for Sunday, May 12: Caithness v Buckie (2pm); Orkney v Ross and Cromarty; Ross County v Clachnacuddin; Sutherland v Nairn.
