Thurso take on Bonar Bridge at Migdale on Saturday in a North Caledonian Cup first-round tie, and the Vikings' manager Michael Bremner hopes it can be the spark for a positive sequence of results after a frustrating start to 2022 for his team.

Having secured the first silverware of the North Caley season by winning the Football Times Cup in November, Thurso – who are second bottom of the league, with games in hand – would relish another cup adventure.

"The league has not been our friend this season so hopefully we can push on and get another wee run in a cup," Bremner said.

"The beginning of this year has been a bit stop-start – we've only had one game whereas we were scheduled to have three. We've had two called off already.

"Hopefully a win on Saturday in the cup will push us on and we can get a run going and get a bit of confidence in the team."

Bonar are having their best season since returning to the league three years ago and are eighth in the table.

Meanwhile, Thurso's league derby against Halkirk United – postponed at the weekend because of Covid-19 issues – has been rearranged for Tuesday at Morrison Park with an 8pm kick-off.

Golspie's bid to retain the title suffered a major setback as they picked up a solitary point in two games played over three days.

The Sutherland side were held to a 2-2 draw by Inverness Athletic at Fort George on Saturday.

Liam Smith gave Inverness Athletic the lead midway through the first half. The league’s top scorer Liam Bremner hit a double to put Golspie in front, but Athletic rescued a point in the last minute through Craig Morrison.

Golspie then lost 1-0 at home to St Duthus on Monday with Ben Bruce scoring from the penalty spot to leave them six points adrift of leaders Loch Ness and two behind second-placed Invergordon.

The Tain side have picked up 13 points from a possible 15 in their last five games, including a 2-1 win at Thurso two weekends ago.

Fixtures: Saturday – North Caledonian League: Golspie Sutherland v Orkney; Loch Ness v Alness United. North Caledonian Cup: Bonar Bridge v Thurso; Halkirk United v Invergordon; Inverness Athletic v St Duthus. Tuesday – North Caledonian League: Thurso v Halkirk United (Morrison Park, 8pm).
