Halkirk United manager Ewan McElroy is optimistic that Saturday’s match against Orkney will go ahead – but he is expecting a tough trip to the islands as always.

Going into the game, Halkirk sit one point behind the islanders having played two more matches.

However, after last weekend’s home match against St Duthus was called off due to the wintry conditions affecting the entire country, they will just be glad to be getting back out on to the pitch.

That said, taking all three points away at Orkney is never an easy task, and McElroy knows it will be easier said than done to come out on top.

“You always want to get the games played but it was not surprising that the game (last week) was postponed with the current conditions,” McElroy explained.

“The forecast looks better this week so hopefully we see some football.

“You always want to finish with as many points and wins as possible in the league. We have four difficult games to finish but the aim will be to finish as well as we can.

“It’s only ever a tough game against Orkney, even more so on their home turf.

“They are one of the in-form teams at the minute and we will need to be at our level best if we want to get anything from the game.”

Although the league table remains congested, Halkirk are unlikely to experience significant upwards movement in the remaining weeks of the campaign.

The task will be made even harder by several players missing the trip to Orkney, but McElroy hopes others can step up in the meantime.

“Kyle Henderson remains suspended, which is obviously not ideal but equally it gives another player the opportunity to stake a claim for the remaining games,” McElroy added.

“We are waiting to check on the fitness of a couple others closer to the time, but both Hasheem Bremner and Andy Mackay are unavailable for this week’s game. “
