IT was a case of “point proved” on Friday night as Thurso Acks shook off the fallout from their shock cup exit to see off John O’Groats 3-0.

Acks travelled to Groats on CAFA Division One business hoping to bounce back from a stunning exit from the Colin Macleod Memorial Cup days before when Division Two Castletown paid them a visit and dished out a 4-1 hammering.

Boss Murray Coghill was not surprisingly looking for a reaction from his players and he got one as two goals from Sean Munro and a David Hale penalty got their league campaign off to a flying start.

Coghill said: “It was a good display from the lads and a very good reaction to what went on against Castletown in the cup.

“The Castletown cup tie was just one of those things. Everything that could go wrong did, and nothing went right for us.

“However, we had a chat about it before playing John O’Groats and we basically said that was over and done with and the best way to get it out of our system would be to win our next game.

“They had a point to prove and they did so with a very good victory. Take nothing away from John O’Groats. Three-nil sounds emphatic but they made it very tough for us.”

On Monday, there were goals aplenty in Division Two as the four fixtures that were played delivered a combined total of 24 goals.

Wick Thistle’s “gr-eight” start to the season continues following their 8-1 demolition of Thurso Pentland. Marc Gunn smashed in a hat trick with Ross McLeod (2), Andy Falconer, Ross McAdie and an own goal completing the scoring. Kieran Campbell netted for Thurso Pentland.

High Ormlie Hotspur kept up their own fine start to the season with a 4-1 win at Top Joes. Kevin Treasurer, Andrew Mackay, Ben Gordon and Grant Mackenzie netted for Spurs, with Mark Munro’s penalty being the home side’s consolation strike.

Confidence at Castletown remains high as they followed up their shock cup win at Acks with a 3-0 win away to Watten. Chris Sutherland, Michael Smith and Gavin Henderson were on target for Kevin Mackay’s side.

Fans of FC Retro were ecstatic as goals from Jack Steven (2), Tony Miller (2), Jamie Howden and Craig Nicolson gave them a 6-1 victory over Keiss who had Andrew Plowman net for them.

Fixtures (all kick-offs 6.45pm): Friday, May 4 – CAFA Division Two: Thurso Pentland v FC Retro. Tuesday, May 8 – CAFA Division Two: Castletown v Top Joes; Francis Street Club v FC Retro; High Ormlie Hotspur v Wick Thistle; Keiss v Watten.
