Caithness United under-16s stormed to a 13-3 victory over their Inverness Athletic counterparts at Bught Park in the Highland capital.

Sunday's match was the Caithness squad's first away trip of the league season and for the first 20 minutes both teams looked sluggish and untidy in the wet conditions. United led 3-1 at the break.

A rejigged and rejuvenated side emerged in the second half, with Caithness making good use of the wide areas and creating lots of opportunities.

Tyler Gordon led the way with four goals, while the other Caithness scorers were Jayden Bremner (3), Scott Macdonald (2), Steven Esson and Connor Davidson along with two own goals.

Caithness coach Kevin Miller said: “A big disappointment for me was how we always seem to start games slowly, home and away. It’s a bad habit that we will be working to eradicate. To date we have got off with it, but it’ll come back to bite us if we continue in that manner.

"On a positive note, we were a lot more inventive in the second half and I thought the lads responded well to a frank talking-to at half-time, going on to score a lot of good goals.”

Sunday also saw a dominant 12-0 win for Caithness United U14s against Brora Rangers at the Upper Bignold in Wick.

Caithness U14 coach Stewart Ross said: “Most pleasing was the manner in which the boys played. As well as a few cracking individual goals, there were a number of beautifully crafted team goals.

"The boys are gelling quickly together and trying to transfer the hard work being done on the training pitch. There is a definite improvement in our patience in possession and our general pattern of play in what has been only a matter of weeks.

"This weekend's trip to Fort William and the following week's home game against Clach will prove tougher tests, and more of a measure of where we stand, but the signs are good so far.”

Caithness scorers were Max Ross (4), Morgan Timbrell (2), Danny Macdonald (2), Harris Shone, Matthew Cook, Logan Macadie and Seth Bunch.
