Begg is Thurso's May Medal winner on countback

The winner of Thurso Golf Club's May Medal on Saturday was Jocky Begg with a nett 66, beating the on-form David Irvine on countback.

Begg reached the turn in 44, which was two over his handicap. However, a birdie at the 14th saw him play the last six holes in level par to return a gross 80.

Irvine was the opposite. After reaching the turn he was three under his handicap but he faded on the back nine, starting and finishing with double bogeys. Nevertheless he still returned a nett score three under par.

Alan Coghill (handicap 10) also had a good front nine, going out in 38, but his back nine had 40 shots as he returned 68 for third place.

Harvey Cowe (16) was two under his handicap at the turn but he also could not maintain the scoring on the front nine as he also returned a nett 68.

Bryan Suttar, Cameron Reid, Neil Rigg, Innes Mitchell and Tyler Gordon all had nett 69s. Alan Swanson had the lowest gross with a 74.

Sunday saw the Bert Brownlee Open which was a pairs better ball. Iain Dunnett and Graeme Henderson had three birdies apiece as they returned a winning nett score of 62.

In second place were James Moodie and Andrew Lannon with a net 63. Overall third were Alan Swanson and Jim Sangster.
