Bain secures victory in Reay's Ronnie Wallace Open

THE Ronnie Wallace Open was played in bright and breezy conditions at Reay, with some impressive scores posted in an event sponsored by Direct Rail Services.

The overall winner was Andy Bain with an excellent round of 75 which gave the 10-handicapper a score of nett 65. His steady round included a single birdie at the tricky 10th hole.

Gavin Gunn was unfortunate to be edged into second place after he also carded a round of 75 for nett 66. Gunn managed to birdie two par fives during his round, the fifth and 14th.

Recently appointed club captain Evan Sutherland finished in third place after he also carded two birdies, at the 10th and 11th, on his way to a round of 77 for nett 69.

The ladies’ prize was won by Mollie O’Brien as a steady round of 80, which included a birdie at the sixth hole, gave her a nett 73.

The second round of the Dunnett Cup was also a low-scoring affair, with Martin Bain topping the standings on countback ahead of Simon Harper after both recorded scores of nett 66. Bain, playing off 13, managed birdies at the sixth and 10th during his round of 79, while Harper went one better with three birdies at the fourth, fifth and eighth holes during his round of 72.

Gregor Munro, David Mackay and Michael Smith shared third place after all three posted rounds of nett 69. After a superb nett 63 in the first round, Harper finished overall winner of the Dunnett Cup with a tremendous winning aggregate score of 129.

Some heavy showers added to the test faced by players in the Parry Trophy. But John O’Brien didn’t let the conditions affect him as he cruised to the win with an impressive round of 72 for nett 66, helped along his way by birdies at the second and 16th holes.

Andy Bain and Tom Ross finished two strokes adrift after both posted nett 68s.

In the Jacobs Summer Cup, Leslie Malcolm topped the standings in round two with an excellent score of 40 Stableford points ahead of Lee Parnell on 37 and Colin Paterson on 36.

Round three was won by Simon Harper with 37 points, ahead of John O’Brien on 36, and a trio of players, Colin Paterson, Donald Mowat and Tom Ross, who finished on 34.

In the ladies’ May Medal, Carol Paterson held off a clutch of challengers including Maggie Fecitt and Pam Bain to win with a score of nett 71. Fecitt took second place on 73, with Bain finishing a stroke further adrift.

Club secretary Jacqui Greig took a break for her administrative duties to top the standings in round two of the Summer Stableford with a steady round giving a score of 34 points. Maggie Fecitt again finished second on 33 points, with Pam Bain and Carole Cameron completing the podium positions after both accumulated 31 points.

The McKenzie Cup was also a keenly fought affair, with Su Hawes edging out Carol Paterson by a single Stableford point after her round yielded 34 points compared with Paterson’s 33.
