The winning team of Robin Colvin, Mike Irwin and George Mowat, from Golspie, accept the trophy from Lybster president Gordon Campbell with the losing finalists of Eileen Perry, Di Sutherland and Margaret Larnach.

TEAMS from host club Lybster were joined by entries from Thurso, Wick Rosebank, Dornoch and Golspie to compete in the Lybster Open Triples 2012 competition.

Playing a round-robin format of three games each over 10 ends, with the top two teams going forward to the final, there was all to play for after the first two rounds.

Only three teams had won both games and it was still open to others to stop their progression. However, all three were successful in the third round and therefore shot difference was called into deciding who was to be in the final. Coming out top was the Golspie trio of Robin Colvin (lead) Mike Irwin (second) and George Mowat (skipper) with six points and +29 shots.

Second team and also through to the final was the Lybster ladies trio of Margaret Larnach (lead), Di Sutherland (second) and Eileen Perry (skipper) with +18 shots which took them comfortably past another Lybster trio of John Cullop (lead), Marshall Bowman (second) and Stan Fraser (skipper) who could only garner +9 shots over the three rounds. In the final the Golspie triple got off to a flyer being 9-1 up at the halfway point after six ends in the 12-end final.

They continued to close out every effort the ladies made to get back into things and ran out worthy winners by the 12th and final end.

This was a back-to-back victory in Lybster for Robin and George, having won the Jack Mowat Open Pairs only two weeks ago.

Ably assisted by Mike Irwin this time in their latest triumph, this means that two of Lybster’s open competition trophies now reside on the other side of the Ord in 2012.
