Halkirk United will look to get their North Caledonian League title challenge back on track when they head to Nairn County A.

A 4-3 defeat to St Duthus at Morrison Park last weekend has seen the Anglers fall to fourth place in the league and eight points behind leaders Loch Ness.

Manager Ewan McElroy says while disappointed with last week’s result, the objective for this season is to improve and be among the top clubs in the division.

“Our main focus for the season remains the same, we want to continue to improve while competing with the teams above and around us,” he said.

“We know how competitive the league is and our aim is to finish as high as possible while looking to build a squad capable of challenging all teams as we go.”

Goalkeeper Kieron Macleod was sent off in the first half in last week’s 4-3 defeat to St Duthus.

He will be suspended for tomorrow’s match, but McElroy tips Macleod to learn from last weekend’s red card and come back stronger than ever.

“It was an uncharacteristic mistake from Kieron who has been superb all season for us.

“I have no doubt he will come back even stronger as that’s the type of lad he is.

“They boys battled brilliantly and fully deserved taking the lead even while down to 10 in the second half.

“Unfortunately, a couple individual mistakes cost us.”

McElroy was also impressed with two players who played their first games this campaign.

“Ryan Sutherland (jnr) and Marc Coghill played their first games of the season on Saturday. I thought both acquitted themselves really well and both have that combative, committed attitude that is essential in the middle of the park. Grant MacNab continues to impress, scored another cracking goal and his overall work rate was superb.”
