WICK Triathlon Club’s annual 10K race — which it runs in conjunction with North Highland Harriers (NHH) — took place on Easter Sunday.

After last year’s slight change to the route, it was decided to remain with the same course which takes runners from Hill of Noss Farm to Noss Head lighthouse and back.

The weather was ideal for the time of the year, with the sun shining and a gentle, cool breeze in the faces of the runners as they set off on the 6.2 mile scenic, gently undulating course. Entries were up on last year with 35 runners taking part, which included a high percentage of young entrants.

From the outset, Halkirk native Andrew Douglas, who runs for Inverclyde AC, took a commanding lead and pulled away from the field. He made light work of the inclines and completed the course in a record time of 31 minutes. It was a remarkable achievement given that injury meant this was his first race since November.

Last year’s winner, Robert Turner from Edinburgh AC, was second in 34.36. Hard on his heels was Thurso’s Graeme Taylor, who also runs for Edinburgh AC, in 34.52.

The first junior home was Paul Kerr, from Orkney Triathlon Club, finishing strongly in overall fourth place. First woman home was NHH runner Lorna Stanger. She was followed closely by Joan Hendry who has just returned to racing. Third was Amy Sutherland from Thurso.

Special mention must go to juniors Mark Taylor and Robyn Aitkenhead, who excelled in their first 10K races.

As it was Easter Sunday, all runners received an Easter egg, along with a medal.

The club’s next event is the May Mini triathlon on May 5 in Wick.
