The Greens kick off their season on Saturday with a testing National Shield first-round tie away to Grangemouth Stags.

The squad will be looking to reap the benefits of a gruelling pre-season programme under the watch of coach Kenny Russell and second-team coach Cameron Boyd.

"It has gone pretty well," Russell said. "The boys are in good shape. We are missing a few on Saturday but we'll be travelling with a pretty decent squad and we're relishing the challenge of a cup tie."

Centre Charlie Quinn (ribs) and full-back Cameron Ryder (head) passed fitness checks, though back-rower Grant Anderson is on an offshore stint.

The Webster brothers, Scott and Dougie, miss out as they are harvesting on their farm.

Russell has installed stand-off/centre Marc Anderson as skipper with second row Kevin Brims as vice-captain.

It is Marc's second spell at the helm and he will be hoping he stays clear of the injury jinx that has dogged his career.

Russell said: "Marc is a leader on and off the pitch. Once the boys run over the white line, there's not a massive amount us coaches can do so it's great to have characters like Marc and Kevin there.

"Kevin will run the forwards and make the lineout calls."

Caithness competed a double over the Stags in last year's Caley 1, winning 39-0 in Thurso in October and 22-7 away in January.

Russell is not reading too much into these results, however.

"We're travelling on the first day of the season and we're going up and down on the same day so it's undoubtedly going to be tough," he said.

"The Shield has probably come a week or two early for us, if I'm honest, but we've been training hard and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the boys perform."
