Steven Anderson struck the decisive goal as Wick Groats began their Caithness AFA Division One campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Acks on Wednesday night.

Craig Sutherland put the Thurso side in front in the first half but John Budge levelled soon after. Anderson, the former Wick Academy striker, secured all three points for Kevin Anderson's men.

Groats had been eight-in-a-row county league winners before Covid led to the 2020 and 2021 campaigns being called off, and they had to settle for runners-up spot behind Pentland United last year.

Swifts, the Division Two runners-up last summer, started their latest quest for promotion with a convincing 6-1 victory over Top Joe’s.

Goals by Bailey Morrison, Liam Miller and Rory Taylor put Swifts three up at the break. Jack MacGregor pulled one back for TJ's but Swifts added three more through Ebisine Ambakederemo, Robbie Boyd and Kian Mackay.

Friday sees the Craig Banks memorial match as Lybster play host to Keiss in Division Two.
