A North West Sutherland Amateur League match had to be abandoned after just 25 minutes last night - after a player for the the home team decided he’d had enough.

Inver had raced into a 13-0 lead by the time the game was called off by referee Leslie West after hosts Dornoch City were reduced to just seven players, having started the match with just eight.

It was a second attempt at a league debut for Dornoch, who returned to the North West Sutherland ranks this year, after they were unable to fulfil their scheduled fixture against Helmsdale United last week and had to forfeit the game 3–0.

Their only two matches prior to Friday had come in cup competitions — where they suffered heavy defeats, 19–0 against Lochbroom in the Stafford Cup and 16–1 against Inver in the Highland Amateur Cup.

Despite the score, Inver were quick to express sympathy toward their opponents.

Speaking after the game, Inver manager Paul Connolly said: “I take my hat off to the Dornoch manager for turning up and trying to bring amateur football to the town, but sadly he doesn’t seem to have much backing. Running a team is a big commitment.

“I feel sorry for our boys, some of which had finished work early to make the game.”

Inver’s goals came thick and fast before the game was halted. Alex Mackenzie netted five times, with Reece Wilson adding a hat-trick.

Bruce Urquhart (2), Aiden Stainke, Jack Corbett and Jordan Hailes were also on the scoresheet.

The match had originally been scheduled for today at Inver, but was moved to the Meadows in Dornoch and switched to Friday evening at short notice, with Dornoch citing concerns over the surface at Osprey Park.

The following games are scheduled to be played today:

Helmsdale United v Lochinver (2pm)

Golspie Stafford v Melvich (1pm)

Embo v Brora Wanderers (1pm)

Lairg Rovers v Tain Thistle (3pm)
