ABIGAIL Duncan scored a major coup for the far north in the darts world when she beat the best young players in Scotland to walk away with the Central Youth Open under-18 girls’ title.

The 13-year-old put in a stunning performance in Bannockburn to win the competition and qualify for the 2017 Winmau World Masters.

The Wick High pupil was delighted to win the tourney and is excited about her upcoming chance to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best up-and-coming throwers.

She said: “It was a good competition to win and I enjoyed having my friends with me. I’m excited about the opportunity to play in the Winmau competition and it will be a great experience for me.”

Abigail was part of a seven-strong Caithness Youth Darts contingent who travelled to the competition with each of the youngsters playing well in their respective competitions.

In the quarter finals, Caithness players Sammie Campbell and Kara Sutherland faced each other after both winning their first round matches 3-0.

In an exciting five leg encounter, Sammie edged Kara 3-2 in the decider to set up a semi final showdown with Abigail who breezed through her quarter final match 3-0.

The semi was another five leg thriller with Sammie calling the shots early on as she raced into a 2-0 lead. But Abigail stormed back to take the match 3-2 and book her place in the final.

In the final she proved too good for Rebecca Graham from Angus, winning 3-0 to take the honours.

In the boys’ section, former Scottish junior champion Jack Duncan was in action along with Ryan Campbell and debutants Marc Durrand and Tyler Hutton. Despite spirited performances, all four boys went out in the first round stage.

Caithness Youth Darts is now seeking funding to allow its talented players to compete in more competitions across Scotland during 2017.

It is also planning to hold its first annual competition in Wick in April.
