OVER £500 was raised for the charity Breast Cancer Now by an event which was staged in Caithness at the weekend.

The Wear It Pink zumba class was organised by Wick instructor, Stephanie Harper, and took place in the town's Assembly Rooms on Sunday.

She said: "We had over 40 people turn up, 25 raffle prizes donated as well as endless amounting of baking. It was a great success. We raised £457 on the Sunday afternoon, making well over £500 which has been donated via the Just Giving Page created by me, for Breast Cancer Now." The total on Wednesday stood at £542.

The Wear it Pink event is one of the charity’s biggest fundraising events. Thousands of supporters wear pink as part of dress-up days, bake sales, netball tournaments, wild swims, knitting sessions and even bra displays.

Since it started 20 years ago, Wear it Pink has raised £39 million for people affected by breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Stephanie and others from all over the county took part in the zumba dance in Wick. "I dance with over 100 people every week across Wick, Thurso and surrounding areas and wanted to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Now’s world-class research and life-changing support. The people of Caithness deserve to get some recognition for their kindness," she said.

The event was held between 3pm and 4pm and there was cake, glow sticks, raffles and dancing.

The charity provides support services, trusted information and specialist nurses, who you can talk to people on a free helpline and online forum.

It is backed by dedicated campaigners, who are fighting for the best possible treatment and care for anyone affected by breast cancer.

The charity says the fund-raising efforts help make "life-saving research and life-changing support happen."
