PEOPLE in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross and the two other Highland constituencies are being reminded that their vote matters.

The message came from Highland returning officer Donna Manson ahead of Thursday's general election when polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm.

The count for the three constituencies – Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey; Ross, Skye and Lochaber; and Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross – will take place overnight on Thursday, starting as soon after 10pm as possible, at Inverness Leisure in the city's Bught Lane.

Postal voters who have missed the post can hand in their postal ballot papers to any of the Highland polling stations up until 10pm on Thursday.

To check where your local polling station is, visit the council’s website.

"To mark your vote in the general election simply mark a single X against your choice of candidate," Mrs Manson said. "Clear instructions will be on display in every polling booth and trained polling station staff will be on hand to answer any questions.

"Taking your poll card to the polling station helps, but don’t worry if you forget it as you can still vote without it – just take yourself and vote."

She added that running the election for all three constituencies is a huge operation involving many council staff from across the council area. There will therefore be a reduced level of support for some non-essential council services on Thursday and Friday while staff focus on election duties.

The five candidates in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross are Cheryl McDonald (Labour), Karl Rosie (SNP), Andrew Sinclair (Scottish Conservative and Unionist), Sandra Skinner (Brexit Party) and Jamie Stone (Liberal Democrats).
