More than 40 youngsters enjoyed an afternoon of activities in Wick ranging from tossing the caber to hurling the haggis.

They were taking part in a fun event on a Highland Games theme organised jointly by Pulteneytown and Thrumster Church and Wick and Keiss Baptist Church.

The rain just about stayed at bay for the gathering at Bignold Park on Wednesday, August 11.

A total of 43 primary-aged children were welcomed by a piper, and they had a go at the Military Two-Step before getting on with the games.

Traditional challenges such as tug of war and tossing the caber were on offer along with hurling the haggis, standing long jump, beat the goalie and a wellie toss. Stories from the Bible were also shared.

The event was staged in lieu of the holiday club week usually held in Pulteneytown church.

Rob Petersen, mission development worker at Pulteneytown and Thrumster Church, said: “We are always grateful for the opportunity to serve the local community. That being said, this event was very special to be a part of.

"It was a great mix of celebrating the Scottish culture and the love of Jesus. It was also a real joy to see all the happy faces after such a rough year.

"We hope that all who attended were uplifted and encouraged."

He added: "The organising team would like to thank all the volunteers involved, High Life Highland for its help in the hire of Bignold Park and East End Football Club for the loan of football goals and balls, along with Jack's Flooring and Plowman's Carpets for the 'cabers'.

"Thank you all for helping make this a great event!"

One parent said: “My daughter and her friend had a great time – the caber-tossing was their favourite event. They enjoyed chatting to the leaders and had a lot of fun.”
