After a two-year break due to Covid, Latheron Hall Committee (LHC) hope to get the 2023 social calendar off to a good start when it host its Burns Supper this Saturday (January 21) in the village hall.

LHC says it has cast its net far-and-wide to source guest speakers and artistes who will provide the evening’s entertainment through speeches, music and poetry.

To begin the proceedings the haggis will be piped in by Wick High School pupil Andrew Sinclair from Nottingham Mains. As well as being musically talented, Andrew enjoys a good game of rugby or football.

The "Address to the Haggis" will be recited by Graham Mackay from Forss, Thurso. A former young farmer, Graham has enjoyed participating in speech making and stock judging and is now part of the management team at Vulcan and Rolls Royce.

A committee spokesperson said: "The evening’s main honour of proposing the Immortal Memory will fall to Anson MacAuslan. Anson is factor on the Welbeck Estate at Berriedale and with his wide-ranging knowledge and interests, the company will be ensured an entertaining insight into the life of the bard.

"Taking a break from his busy schedule to Toast the Lasses will be local farmer, John Grant from Swiney Hill, Lybster. John is well used to working with females but usually of the four-legged variety when pregnancy scanning sheep and cows around the county.

"To reply for the fairer sex is Pat Ramsay from Wick. A former head teacher, Pat is very community minded and is currently kept busy coordinating supply and demand at Wick's food bank and in her time off enjoys a cold water swim with the Staxigoe Selkies."

The event will be chaired by long-standing LHC member Jim Macgregor who farms locally at Latheron Mains and Remiggy, Lybster. Jim will ensure the event flows smoothly and all are "guaranteed to be entertained by some of his sharp wit".

A three-course meal of Scotch broth, haggis, neeps and tatties along with trifle is prepared and served by the committee and helpers. Then with the formalities over it will be time to "take the floor" with music being provided by Robin Young and Fusion.

Tickets cost £15 and are available from local butcher Donald Cormack who makes and supplies the essential haggis for the event.
