THERE was an environmentally friendly aspect to Bower Primary School's World Book Day celebrations on Thursday.
Pupils were asked to dress up as a character from a book by re-using or recycling items from home – very much in keeping with the school's eco status.
The children went to great efforts to rise to the challenge. Staff were impressed by the variety of characters and the imaginative costumes, inspired by authors including J K Rowling and Julia Donaldson.
The day was spent sharing books with friends and sharing their love of reading. In the afternoon the pupils used potatoes to create a character from a book.
Acting head teacher Vicki Ross said: “The children in Bower always go the extra mile. They were so clever to come up with such great costumes by re-using or recycling things from home.
"They had such a great day sharing a variety of books with one another. We had farming magazines, survival guides, diaries and much more.”
World Book Day is a registered charity seeking to give every child and young person a book of their own. It is also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading, and is marked in more than 100 countries all over the world.
