A THURSO woman who stole a fire pit from a shed in the town got her fingers burnt.

The owner of the unit – used to burn logs in the garden – witnessed the theft and the police were contacted.

The thief, Corinna Ness (35) pleaded guilty at Wick Sheriff Court on Tuesday and was ordered to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work.

The court was told that the owner of the unit heard a noise around midnight on September 22 and noticed the door of his unlocked shed in the Ormlie Hill area of Thurso was open.

David Barclay said that that Ness, of Lord Thurso Court, was observed outside with the fire pit.

The fiscal added: "She was caught in the act."

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that Ness had health problems, among them alcohol abuse, a situation which seemed to "take a dip at this time of the year" but was trying to address them.

Sheriff Ian Miller, who was told that the accused was currently under supervision imposed for an unrelated offence, said that the 60 hours of unpaid work would enable her to put something back into the community.

Ness must complete the work within four months.
